Many brochures & ‘kitchen designers’ knowingly, even earnestly, talk of the ’kitchen work triangle’.
NuFit believe ‘the triangle’, however defined, is no substitute for carefully thinking
about how you (plural) will use your new kitchen
- e.g. how will each member of a family use the kitchen, which bits of it, & how often?

History‘The triangle’ came about from a design study at the University of Iliinois School of Architecture (1946-1949) - more than 60 years ago!
It was born out of the ‘time & motion studies’ etc which had gained credence in industry (particularly manufacturing). These, in turn, originated from ‘scientific management’ of the 1880’s – 1930’s which analysed labour productivity & economic efficiency. |
OriginallyOriginally, it seems, the idea was to design the kitchen so as to have short distances to walk between the most frequently used things – the sink, cooker & food storage (esp. the fridge today). The proposal was to arrange them in a triangle.
In many small kitchens, it would be difficult not to have them in a triangle anyway! |
2012The diagram is repeated below, annotated in red, with commonplace 21st century complications to the triangle model
